 Jonathan Thompson, an award-winning investigative environmental journalist, recently published his book River of Lost Souls: The Science, Politics, and Greed Behind the Gold King Mine Disaster. Born, raised, and deeply rooted to the region, Thompson has partnered with Torrey House Press, Mountain Studies Institute, and San Juan Citizens Alliance to offer a Durango writing workshop for youth and adults in the Animas River Watershed. 

This workshop will offer a unique and valuable opportunity for local writers of all ages to connect to one another and to receive tools, feedback, and guidance from professionals. Writers will respond to the theme “Writing Place: The Animas River Region,” and should submit their initial short story, poems, or essay no later than June 15 to receive feedback from Thompson and Allen during the workshop. Writing can address the meaning or experiences of home in the region, the responsibility of being an upstream or downstream neighbor, or another creative take on the prompt. Participants will have the opportunity to share a final piece at the 2018 Innovation Expo kick-off event on Tuesday, August 28 in Silverton, Colorado.
